April Forum: Hyperacute Stroke Management
Welcome to our April forum at the Cambridge Pre-Hospital Care Programme, held monthly at Anglia Ruskin University, East Road Campus. Our theme for April is hyperacute stroke care, and we have two incredible expert speakers lined up.
Our first speaker is Daniel Phillips.
Talk title: Mobile Stroke Units: How to solve £1m problem. Bridging Stroke and Community Emergency Medicine.
This talk will discuss the incredible and innovative Advanced Mobile Stroke Unit operating in the region, ultimately looking to improve care for patients presenting with signs and symptoms of a stroke and reduce time to diagnosis and management.
Dan is an Advanced Paramedic (Critical Care), Sector Clinical Lead, Suffolk and North East Essex
East of England Ambulance Service, and Principal Investigator for the Advanced Mobile Stroke Unit for Pre-Hospital Emergency Care. He is also a Critical Care Paramedic with MAGPAS Air Ambulance and Clinical Lead for Suffolk Accident Rescue Service.
With over 20 years of experience in pre-hospital care, Dan is a leading figure in his field. He has played a pivotal role in developing and implementing innovative models of care at local, regional, and national levels. His expertise spans all aspects of pre-hospital critical care, but his true passion lies in improving outcomes for patients during their most critical moments.
Dan is a strong advocate for a truly multidisciplinary pre-hospital workforce, recognising that the best patient outcomes are achieved through close collaboration between paramedics, doctors, nurses and others. He is dedicated to integrating paramedic practice alongside medical and nursing colleagues, fostering a more cohesive, diverse, and skilled emergency care system. By championing new ways of working, he is helping to shape the future of pre-hospital emergency medicine.
Our second speaker is Dr Nicholas Evans
Talk title: Time is Brain - Advances in Hyperacute Stroke Management
The last decade has seen significant advances in hyperacute stroke management, resulting in improved outcomes for stroke survivors. However, the projected rise in stroke incidence and increased pressure on acute services represents major challenges. This talk will consider current approaches to hyperacute stroke management, as well as the challenges and opportunities for improving treatment in the early stages of stroke.
Dr Nicholas Evans is a Stroke Association Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Cambridge and Honorary Consultant in Stroke Medicine at Addenbrooke's Hospital. His research focuses on two areas: (i) advanced imaging of carotid atherosclerosis and hyperacute stroke, and (ii) how ageing affects the response to hyperacute stroke treatments. His research has received awards from the Royal Society of Medicine, British and Irish Association of Stroke Physicians, European Stroke Organisation, Wellcome Trust, and Royal College of Physicians. He is a Fellow and Director of Studies at Wolfson College, University of Cambridge.
This looks to be an informative and exciting evening, suitable for all those who manage patients in the emergency setting.
